Shewise Statement on Recent Race Riots in the UK

Shewise stands in solidarity with the communities affected by the recent race riots in the UK. We recognize the profound impact these events have had on the Muslim community, the South Asian and ethnic minority communities, as well as the Black community. These incidents have caused fear and distress across the country, and we extend our heartfelt support to all those who are struggling in the wake of these unsettling times.

As an organization committed to empowering women and supporting vulnerable communities, we understand the fear and anxiety many individuals are experiencing. For those who feel unsafe or uncertain, it is important to remember that you are not alone.

If you or someone you know needs mental health support, there are organizations available to help. Mind provides mental health services across the UK and offers culturally sensitive counseling. Samaritans is another invaluable resource, providing 24/7 confidential support for anyone in distress. For those specifically within the Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities, Black Minds Matter UK offers free therapy by qualified professionals. The Muslim Youth Helpline is also available to offer faith and culturally sensitive advice and support to young people. These organizations are here to listen and to support you through this difficult period.

Organizations have a crucial role to play in ensuring the safety and well-being of their employees during times of crisis. To support employees who are fearful of coming to work, it is essential to consider offering flexible work arrangements, such as remote working options or adjusted hours, to those who feel unsafe commuting or being in certain environments. Open communication is also key; employees should feel empowered to express their concerns without fear of judgment or retaliation, and leadership must actively listen and respond to these concerns. Additionally, providing cultural competency training to all staff is an important step in creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace environment. This training can help employees understand the challenges their colleagues may face and foster a culture of empathy and respect.

In times of crisis, peer support can be incredibly powerful. We encourage everyone to reach out to colleagues and friends who may be affected by recent events. A simple message of support can make a significant difference to someone who is struggling. Being an ally in these times is also crucial—stand up against any form of racism or discrimination you may witness and advocate for those whose voices may be marginalized. Education is another vital component; taking the time to learn about the experiences of other communities and understanding the historical and systemic issues that contribute to such conflicts can help create a more compassionate and informed society.

5 KEY STEPS TO STAY SAFE DURING TIMES OF UNREST:

1. STAY INFORMED AND AVOID HIGH-RISK AREAS: KEEP UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST NEWS AND AVOID AREAS WHERE TENSIONS ARE HIGH.

2. TRAVEL SAFELY AND STAY CONNECTED: WHEN TRAVELING, BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND SHARE YOUR LOCATION WITH A TRUSTED CONTACT AND REGULARLY CHECK IN WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS.

3. USE TECHNOLOGY FOR SAFETY: USE YOUR PHONE TO SHARE YOUR LIVE LOCATION WITH TRUSTED CONTACTS AND KEEP EMERGENCY NUMBERS EASILY ACCESSIBLE. ALWAYS CARRY A FULLY CHARGED PHONE AND KNOW WHERE TO FIND HELP IF NEEDED.

4. PROTECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH: LIMIT EXPOSURE TO DISTRESSING NEWS AND SOCIAL MEDIA. PRACTICE SELF-CARE AND REACH OUT TO SUPPORT NETWORKS OR MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES IF YOU NEED HELP COPING WITH ANXIETY OR FEAR.

5. REPORT INCIDENTS AND KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: REPORT ANY HATE CRIMES TO THE POLICE AND SEEK SUPPORT FROM ORGANIZATIONS LIKE STOP HATE UK. FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH YOUR RIGHTS, ESPECIALLY IN INTERACTIONS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT, TO ENSURE YOUR SAFETY.

We are grateful to our partners who have shown immense solidarity and support to shewise in these difficult times. at shewise we are committed to fostering a community of understanding, respect, and unity. Let us move forward with compassion and determination to create a safer and more inclusive society for all.
